Agree in part. Given that the majority of people are not going to be any good at self diagnosis, and that such can cause far more problems than it helps, a visit to the doctor will be the preferable choice for most individuals for diagnosis and treatment.
That the drug companies 'control' medecine to an extent is known, and yes these companies are driven by profit. However there is no proof that they have withheld cures for major diseases because they make more money treating the disease than curing it.
