Links to other websites should always fall into categories that align with the content of your website. You have a site ranking of 8 because search engines find you as an definitive information source for the type of content on your website and you don't want any links that would break you from this trend. Other than this, what could happen with any link request is, they sent a request to hundreds of websites at the same time and all of these portals added a link back to that website. This is what would really become an issue for you. Google doesn't like seeing an instant boost in link backs. I don't have an exact number for you here but if Google sees an additional 100 links back to this website who wants to buy an link from you all sites are affected. We saw this happen with our portals a few months back. We're a member of an association that when we added a footer with links to some of the members websites, in turn saw a tend across all sites with this footer that we were all dropping from the index's, Google Yahoo and MSN etc. We all had PR's of 6 + as well. When we removed the footer we eventually gained back our position in the index's but it did take a few months. I wouldn't count out the link, just ask for some additional information about their current linking activities.
