Found this on Wired today:

*1930:* The first automobile trip using a diesel engine is completed from
Indianapolis to New York City. The 1,300-mile trip was more than a stunt,
since it helped demonstrate the usefulness of the diesel as a viable
alternative to the internal combustion engine.

Given all the fuss these days about the need to find alternatives to fossil
fuels, it's worth noting that inventor Rudolf
Diesel<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Diesel>originally
envisioned his engine running on vegetable oil. When he
apparently committed suicide by jumping overboard on a crossing of the
English Channel in 1913, at least one conspiracy theory surfaced suggesting
that he was bumped off by nervous oil investors.

Funny how what seemed laughable then sounds entirely plausible now.
Interesting, too, that following Diesel's death, the engine was
re-engineered to run using only petroleum-based fuel.

Seems this guy was ahead of his time.
