It depends on where you live to a great deal. Down in the DC area where I used 
to live Toyota, Accord, Lexus, etc. are all very popular and for SUVs will 
typically cost in the 30-40K+ price range new. There are some cheaper hybrids, 
but as someone mentioned, the US made ones just aren't terribly good. Which is 
part of the big argument the US auto makers have, that higher efficiency laws 
would put them at a disadvantage particularly since a lot of their market *is* 
in the cheap trucks and SUVs. And a lot of people may not even know to look for 
hybrids when shopping for SUVs. There's still a lot of people that think it 
means a car the size of a Prius.
