The issue with mobile browsing is not so much whether you have a browser that can render the page, but how much bandwidth and horsepower you have on your phone, as well as what UI design is most usable. I have a Windows Mobile-based device that renders most Web pages fairly well. It doesn't do JS, so AJAX is out, but it does Flash (and therefore Flex) just fine.
Even so, I don't pull up standard web pages all that often. cnn.com, for instance, takes forever to load and render (maybe not forever, but 20 seconds per page is normal). That's unacceptable. I want to use sites that render content in a way I can see it quickly and effectively. Gmail is actually really good at it, as is Windows LiveMail. My frustration with standard interfaces has grown to the point where I keep thinking I should build a portal site that I can use to pull in a bunch of RSS news feeds and display them in a mobile-friendly way.
