Who knew better? The French and the Russians who stood to loose business
deals that went against the Sanctions? The same countries that gave us
intel stating that Iraq still had and was making the banned weapons.

The weapons was the reason for invasion, and while only a few weapons
were found, it doesn't excuse Hussein from what he did. He defied the UN
sanctions every chance he got. He targeted American and British aircraft
in the no-fly zone. He refused to provide documentation of the disposal
of the banned weapons, and he made business deals that went against the
oil for food program so that he could personally profit while his people
suffered.

You asked why we were currently fighting in Iraq, not why we went in.
