The Way I Read Your Point:
-----------------------------------------
The US doesn't need a military presence in the ME because the ME will
always sell oil to us due to its profit incentive.

My Point:
------------------------------------------
Not true. Were Bin Laden (or anyone unfriendly to the US) to take
control of Saudi Arabia (as Bin Laden said his primary mission was)
they would be able to single handedly control oil and thus the world
economy. They may not be motivated by profit incentive and they could
completely shut off Saudi Arabian oil. The US has always understood
this (since the 40s) and felt that, therefore, a military presence was
needed in the ME to secure the constant and free flow of oil.
Therefore the US invaded Iraq PRIMARILY to secure this oil flow: both
because it would give them a forward base in the region AND settle
growing Saudi unrest since the US could pull out of Saudi.
