We both lack the social cues to recognize this behavior easily AND the behavior mimics other social cues that, when responded to in error, result in embarrassment. It's a deadly combination. I'm sure that some kind of common social cue will evolve to manage this, but considering the small size of the devices and the lack of physical manipulation needed to use them I think it will be fairly ambiguous and subtle. In the end I think we'll end up with some kind of "ignore me, I'm in my own space" cue or gesture. Something that says "I'm on the phone" or "I'm listening to music" or "I'm watching on a movie on my retinal projector".
