are they audio cds, or digital audio files (mp32, aac)?

If they are aac, they are drmed/copy protected. And unless associated with
that iPod, wont play.

You can always convert them to mp3, or burn them to disk, and then rip them
back from the disk (hence removing the drm, in perfectly legal way)
