Does anybody have any knowledge or insight into how a web hosting company
works? Specifically, the technology or business model?

My company is working on a project and we are looking at possibly setting up a
hosted environment for this application. So, I am looking for information on
how shared hosting environments are setup and run.

>From a technology standpoint ...

  - I assume application servers are still split from database and mail servers?

  - Are application servers big boxes with internal RAID, or small 1U boxes
attached to disk arrays? Are the load balanced with fail overs?

  - I assume ColdFusion enterprise with sandbox security would be utilized?

  - How many sites can you host on a server?

>From a business standpoint ...

  - Do hosting company's have active sales teams seeking new customers or just
answering the phones based upon marketing efforts?

  - What kind of marketing efforts do they utilize? Web based? Search
Engines? Direct mail? Magazine Ads? Cold Calling?

  - Assuming an 'average' quality and priced product offering, what kind of
numbers are reasonable in terms of new customers and turnover each month?

I am not sure where I can find this type of information, so I thought I would
see if there are any knowledgeable people lurking around here.

Thanks for any help or pointers.
