I dunno - the article is kind of retarded to me.

First off, he's wrong. Just plain wrong: SQL Server Express (as of Service
Pack 1) runs just fine on Vista and is fully supported. Apparently there is
a known problem with user access accounts (one that I've never hit myself)
but that's it.

It's actually other edition which will need service pack 2 to run on Vista -
but these are exactly the editions that shouldn't be run on a desktop OS to
begin with.

But he makes it sound like this problem is some kind of boon for Oracle and
IBM.

The market for Desktop database apps is smaller now than ever due to the
popularity of web-based DB tools (I don't care what the article says). And
of those that DO exist most run in MS Access (which also runs in Vista), not
SQL Server Express.

In short in the desktop DB application space SQL Server 2005 Express's most
challenging competition is actually Access - nothing from IBM or Oracle even
comes close in terms of installed base.

Secondly those that DO run (presumably) mission-critical desktop DB apps are
exactly those that will probably not be upgrading to Vista anytime soon (the
"upgrade's not run until service pack one" folks).

All told when you eliminate the false information and look at things
realistically it just seems like more FUD to me.
