Stability is important, as is hardware compatibility, but I really don't
think either of those things are issues - nor have they been issues - for
quite some time.  Windows is *FAR* more stable than it was in the Win98/98
days.

As for application compatibility - you can't entirely blame Microsoft for
the fact that developers have been ignoring the rules for years, and MS has
always let them get away with it.  Most of the applications that BREAK under
Windows Vista will do so because they are poorly written applications that
violate coding standards set forth YEARS ago, and the tighter security being
implemented won't allow them to do that any more.  In fact, the
virtualization of the system folders is a Windows Vista feature only, and
Microsoft has already stated that they will NOT support it in the next major
release of Windows.  That means any softare still trying to write to
C:\Windows or C:\Program Files just plain won't work any more, and to hell
with backwards compatibility at that point.
