You're saying that a key advantage of Open Source is that the user
himself can alter the code and extend functionality as he needs to.
You also mentioned the many modifications and extensions of the Apache
webserver as evidence of this activity and the benefits to be derived
from it. The opinion was raised that the ability to modify Open Source
is not of great importance given that the majority of normal users
simply are not skilled enough to make modifications. In response you
said the fact that only skilled programmers could edit code did not
mean that editing code was not important and did not result in benefit
to the wider majority of users as a whole.
