A few other things that we could all do to help:

1. Insulate your house - I just had insulation pumped into the external
walls because the original homes were not insulated in the walls, only the
attic. Keeps the house warmer without heating. We use gas heat, not
electric, but it still burns, so less usage is good.
2. Moderate temperature control - I tend to keep the heat around 68 F, which
is fairly easy on the heating system in San Diego. Cooling is far more
important to moderate.
3. Turn off lights you are not using - This one drives me crazy. My wife
believes in the global warming thing, but she leaves on practically every
light in the house. Fewer lights means less electricity used, which (most
likely in the U.S.) means fewer fossil fuels being burned.
4. Cars - Drive less. Drive a more fuel-efficient car. I'm guilty on this
one right now. I drive 27 miles each way to work. But I am trying to start
doing one day a week at home. Until this past year, though, I've averaged
about 8,000 miles a year for the past decade. Not great, but not bad. I'd
love to work near my house, but like most people, I don't really have that
choice. I still need an SUV (or something similar) to haul my gear, but I'll
buy a hybrid SUV next time around.

I'm not going to put this on the list yet, but supplemental power through
solar is starting to look attractive, especially in southern climates that
get lots of sun (and heat) in the summer.
