We're of French descent so Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) is what we call it.

Believe it or not, Mardi Gras actually has a religous purpose. Before
refrigeration and Vatican II, Fat Tuesday was used as a festival to eat the
remaining fresh meat (poultry, pork and beef) that Catholics had before Lent.
Traditionally Lent was a time of fasting and abstinence from meat.

In Louisiana and coastal France this fell at the start of the seafood harvest
season so the eating of seafood (fish, crustaceons, shellfish and reptiles)
became the prefered way to keep protein in the diet.

I wish the damn fundies would realize this and leave us alone.
