I hear tell just about every component in every computer is made by like
3 companies, in actuality.

That said, part of the higher price may be more component/interaction testing.

Hands down, Apple has shipped us "better" products than say Dell or
Gateway. Far less DOA, and far less components going bad.

They may all be the same manufacturers, but the QC is way different.

And you know all the parts a Mac ships with work well together, which
is one down side to the self-composed systems (don't get me wrong,
I built the machine on our desk at home from parts-- I've got the
experience tho-- joe sixpack doesn't.).

Much as how people tout the ease of use of CF as a reason for paying
the $$$ for it, this analogy is. And as Dave suggests, the prices are
more comparable than ever, actually. 'Prolly see 'em go down more.

One thing is for sure-- it ain't as cut and dry as it used to be. Woot! =]
