Historically a "modern" army is alway at a disadvantage when fighting insurgents or irregulars. However, 20th century advances in firepower have given us a solution. When faced with an insurgent attack, the modern army must apply unlimited to the source area of the attack, the surrounding areas and the home area of the insurgents. No restraint must be shown. The areas need to be pacified. A bomber might want to be a martyr, but does he want his 12 year old daughter or his goat to be one too?
This solution would have worked in Viet Nam if the political leadership had let the military do it. This nation needs to move from nation building to pacification immediately. Once the nation is pacified, we can rebuild it. Even if it is just new town built on parking lots.
