Letters not email mattered.

Emails weren't physical.  When you got mail it was the highlight of your
day, hell your week.

I don't know that having been in combat would change whether you know
what to say to him or not. At any rate try to keep up regular
communication. If you don't have regular communication, start. e-mail,
letters, etc.

I guess we could ask Tim if hearing from home made a difference.
