We don't have a lot of experience with basements in Louisiana where I'm from, but I helped out on a house built into the side of a hill. It was new construction, so it was easier to implement.
On the hill side of the construction the home owner built a course gravel catch basin the length of the exposed wall. The basin was lined with dense clay. Every 10 linear feet the home owner ran 3 to 4 inch PVC drainage pipes from the gravel basin down hill. These terminated at another gravel basin, but without any liner. The gravel was covered with pea gravel and then topsoil/compost. Everything was then covered with sod. I was in highschool when I helped on this project so you can guess who got to do the pick and shovel work.
