You don't know where the error started. This guy was formatting a hard
drive. What are you doing formatting a hard drive on a server to begin with.

Or was it even a server? Did somebody have all the data stored on the
desktop, and got some spyware so they were going to reimage the thing, only
to learn later what happened.

In cases like this where there is a complete failure of a process, or a lack
of a process then you can't blame the one tech that was doing what he
thought was the right thing to do.

You have to assume that at anytime something could break in your hardware,
it could be from a power surge, or a faulty hard drive, but it is going to
happen, regardless of the vendor. Hardware will eventually fail.

You could maybe fire the director of IT for not implementing proper policies
to deal with these situations, but that isn't going to fix the problem. Now
should it happen again, yeah, fire them all.
