When I was young, I read "Night" and "Dawn" (iirc), a couple of books by a holocaust survivor.
I remember the forced marches, the camps, etc.... It amazed me that a human being is truly capable of so much. We are an amazing animal. I knew then, that I could do a lot more than I thought I could. That many were capable of more than they thought. * * * Selfless sacrifice is just so... heavy. Reading stories like the one Tee-dizzle posted gives me shivers. Doesn't really matter the side, this is one of those core human things that is just crazy. The Ultimate Sacrifice (some would say), Reflex, say others, Probably a bit of both... Who wants to live for ever, anyways, right? [-; Yeah, shivers up and down the spine.
