Charlie I hate to tell you this but you're not in Southern California.

Southern California is LA (south of the Valley), Orange County, San
Diego, areas. You must be within 20 miles of a Beach to be considered
to be in Southern California, please take note of "The O.C.", "Beverly
Hills 90210", "Bay Watch", or listen to anything by the Beach Boys. The
Beach Boys never mentioned Colton, Redlands, Banning, Calexico or
anything in Riverside, Imperial, or San Bernardino county. Nor did they
make mention of White Water, or Desert Hot Springs.

You are in the Inland Empire. Formerly know as the vast desert wasteland
east of Southern California and West of Phoenix. However, due to the
popularity of Southern California and all it was perceived to offer
(thanks in larger part to iconic references such as those previously
listed) developers saw $$$ in expanding east into the desert and
marketing it as Southern California or near Palm Springs (anything
within 100 miles). The new comers were duped. Rather than a weekend at
Hermosa you get a weekend in Hemet. Have fun!

However, I do hear there is a movement to rename everything between
Bakersfield and the border as Northern Mexico. Problem is, as is with
much of what happens in that region, most of the marketing is in Spanish
so for the most part we gringos aren't aware of this new naming initiative.
