I had the same issue with the initial installation/creation of the
Shared Service Provider (SSP) called for in the initial install
procedures. I couldn't get MySites of Search to run.

couldn't get the SSP Admin to respond, I could see the files on the
server, I could see that it was running, but I couldn't get to it via
a browser so i couldn't manage it.

banged my head against the wall a lot on that one.

Eventually what I did was create a new SSP (with attendant Web App and
App Pool--did it all through the Central Admin interfaces) and then
moved my previously created sites over to the new SSP, after that it
was a simple matter of running the Search population tools and setting
up MySites via the interface (once i could see it, it was fairly
intuitive)

To set up MySites I assigned an IP address and created a Web App in
IIS, then I created a DB in SQL Server. Then I used the MySite
Settings in the SSP Admin to set it up.

Alas, no, I haven't gone out shopping for any books yet.
