it's true that the Metro works better than the Metrobuses. Unless they
have changed their system, you can get a bus transfer that is good for
a couple of hours. However the idea is that this is for one trip, not
a return, and the drivers do look at that.

You should also be aware that certain parts of DC are definitely not
safe, though Bethesda and anywhere up that main drag into Rockville
should be more than fine. Might want to be wary of waiting at bus
stops at night downtown though.

Montgomery County (where Bethesda is) has a separate system of Ride On
buses that are a little more frequent and a little better secured, so
go with them if you have a choice. All in all though, if the
Metrotrain is an option, take that. DC puts a lot of effort into
making sure the trains are safe.
