Here's my theory: The majority of the ancestors of African Americans in the US were not brought here by choice, and can't really be traced reliably back to country of origin. Also many of the countries in Africa only came into being in the last couple of hundred years, prior to that it was mostly tribal kingdoms, except for what had been captured by Europe.
Consequently, you can't reliably have a "Society of Chadian-Americans" or something like that. So you have an all encompassing org. like the NAACP. We, meaning those of us of non-African descent, can trace our heritage back generations, I've almost got mine traced to the day that our first ancestor got here.
