Ever since I lost a drive a few years ago I won't run a main system without
RAID data-protection. My current board only support 0+1 so I'm running just
1 (mirrored) on two 400 Gig disks.

Hasn't actually saved me - yet - but someday it will!

If you're worried about performance (and really, mirroring isn't really
slow) then you could always complicated things and have a small, fast system
disk and a pair of large, fast mirrored disks for storage. Since the board
supports RAID 5 that's an a good way to go as well... but for best results
you need to stuff four drives in there (lotsa power and heat).

Personally I'd try two RAID 1 disks first and see if you can even notice the
performance difference. Nothing like peace of mind!
