I know nothing of your system but if you're on windoze, try turning the 
auto-updater off in msconfig (one of the articles you referenced 
mentions the updater as a likely cause). Also install the speedup tool 
                   (which automatically disables all plugins except 
those required for that particular document anyway):

This still works on 8.1 AFAIK.
