Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. It took me quite awhile to find Windows Movie Maker. It turned out it was installed on my machine but for whatever reason, there's no menu item for it. It looks like it will probably do what I need.
However it also turns out that the Firewire cable I have doesn't connect to my laptop. My laptop has the mini-IEEE1394 connector. So I have to go get an adapter or a new cable. Its always something.
