There's really no comparison. With Priceline, you pick an area (like
in Chicago, you can pick O'Hare, downtown, and a few others), a
"star-rating" and make a bid. If a hotel accepts your bid, your credit
card is immediately charged. In other words, you don't pick your
hotel, it picks you.

For price comparisons, I've done it three times in Chicago - once
downtown and twice out by O'Hare. Out by O'Hare, I got a night at the
Hyatt for $50. Downtown, I got 2 nights at a swanky boutique hotel
(The Allegro:

impton_hotel.html)
for $80/night. The cheapest Expedia/Orbitz/Travelocity rates for the
same area and nights were over $100, and we ended up in a nicer hotel
than we could have done otherwise, too.

It varies a lot, depending on what's going on, when you book, and if
you're in tourist season or not. But, you can get hotels for sometimes
more than half off the lowest advertised prices. For instance, the
Allegro's current rate is ~200/night. I think it was slightly less
than that in the winter when we went.
