I'm still hoping it can distinguish itself. At the very least it's trying
to be more mysterious (since we don't know the mechanism of it - and I hope
they keep it that way) and he's got the added twists of actually needing to
dodge himself, friends and other travelers in the past and people who think
he's crazy in the future.

I think the main difference is that "Journeyman" seems to be
character-driven where "Quantum Leap" was event-driven.

The point of "Quantum Leap" was the stories of a generation: the gimmick was
simply used to tie those stories together. It was essentially an anthology
series.

In "Journeyman" the point seems to be the characters: the gimmick is used
expose aspects of the characters while also, pretty much secondarily,
telling a story about the past. I think we've already learned more about
the characters in "Journeyman" in the first episode than we did in four
years of "Quantum Leap".

I'm not knocking "Quantum Leap" (Yeah... I'm a Leaper) but I do think that
beyond the base gimmick both series are trying different things (of course
"Journeyman" could downslide down - it's only been one episode).
