Norway was independent until 1400 or so when it was taken over by Denmark, then it was given to Sweden as war spoils after the Napoleonic wars. It became independent in 1905. I've got a lot of relatives in the Tromso and Oslo areas. One thing I do remember about my trips there was how obsessed people were about cross country and downhill skiing. There's a national cross country skiing race every year. It seems that everyone and his or her dogs participate. But basically its one large party on skiis.
