Ahhh Jochem chimes in. *hugs* I'd say the US is starting to turn less inhibited. I wouldn't call it pre-occupied.
I really think that with the information everyone can get to these days instantaneously, that we hear about this stuff much quicker. Not only do people need to keep up with the times as in technological advances (iPhones, MP3 players, faster computers, better cancer treatments, etc) but people need to keep up with the "scope creep" of information and it's availability to society. The programs that run, the almost R rated sitcoms and day time soaps, the internet available to kids and grown ups 24/7.... All these things contribute to a growing society of people who are MORE INFORMED. *We* here, stand flabbergasted at some of these revelations because the majority of us were kids in a time where there really wasn't so much information available so quickly. Now you have the news channels getting a LOT of their news right off the web! They do whole segments on stuff their writers find surfing. When they used to rely on people calling stories in. Now there's people actually combing blogs, and small town new papers etc looking for this fantastic story that'll just rock people's worlds, gross, inhuman, sadistic or otherwise. Because it's the stuff that sells papers and tunes viewers in. The internet is a mixed blessing/curse, and it's highly responsible for the majority of the stuff that goes on out there. Couple it with the sick humans this world already has, the ridiculous laws that come to the front every day, and it makes crimes even worse, let alone human behavior on a day to day basis. Kids are the same as yesteryear, but the info available is different. They also see that parents can't spank them (do I hear DIFYS?) or are powerless to keep things from them (internet/peers). So they end up thinking they can make adult decisions, and woe to the poor parent that tries to reason with them. They end up just pushing away from you. I feel bad for parents sometimes. It's a tough tough job to mold clay into a person with proud character and principles. You want them to be the best they can be, and you have no control over their actual actions. You can only suggest a proper path to take and pray and hope for the best. But, I say a lot of heinous crimes and behavior happened across the states decades before computers, decades before us, but we never heard about them because there's no way that info would get to us. We were too busy playing outside in the dirt, eating bugs, swimming in swamps and accepting rides home from strangers....
