I just got thrown for a loop.

A recruiter just contacted me asking me if I knew of any MySQL dbas in
the area.

MySQL? I use the db as an easy (read cheap) alternative to oracle or
MSSQL for my smallish web sites, but I would think (here comes that
'assuming' thing) that any company that finds themselves in need of a
MySQL dba, would naturally turn to the concept of upgrading their dB to
one of the biggies.

I suggested to the recruiter to tap his Oracle and MSSQL dba list and
see if they have any relevant mastery that would prove helpful to his
client.

MySQL DBA? If you have heard of this, I would be very interested in
hearing about it.

Has MySql really gotten so robust that it needs experts to run it?
