I really enjoyed reading the books. Of course, I thoroughly enjoyed the
Harry Potter series as well, and we know how the Religious Right folks felt
about THAT series.

Catholic League uges Golden Compass boycott
The American Catholic League is calling for Christians to boycott
upcoming fantasy film The Golden Compass.

The League is concerned over portrayals of Christianity in the film
and book, part of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.

League officials claim the books "bash Christianity and promote
atheism to kids".

"Parents might be inclined to say, 'Hey, our kid really enjoyed the
movie, why don't we buy him His Dark Materials for Christmas?' It
introduces the kid to atheism. It's a stealth campaign," League
president William Donohue said.

British author Phillip Pullman has publicly denied allegations that
his work, including The Golden Compass which is being adapted onto the
big screen, is anti-Catholic and promotes atheism. The movie, slated
for a Dec. 7 release, is based on the first book from Pullman's
trilogy, His Dark Materials, in which a young girl's quest to uncover
the reason behind her friend's disappearance concludes with the
killing of a character named God - who turns out to be a phony.
Christian groups such as the Catholic League have criticized the movie
and charged the intentional removal of anti-religious themes as a ploy
to encourage kids to read Pullman's pro-atheism books.

The club's fall book was "The Golden Compass," the first in Philip
Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy. In the first volume, Pullman
invites readers into a world as convincing and thoroughly realized as
Narnia, Earthsea or Redwall.
