I don't see why... the moon, if anything would be a stepping-stone to Mars.

We can handle the orbital-stuff just fine.  Although the moon would be a
truly excellent platform for an observatory...

I'm torn about the moon... one side of me is definitely in the "robots can
do it" camp.  For what we spend on a manned mission we can fund a bundle of
automated missions.  On the other hand I'm a romantic as well - there's
something magical about putting boots on the ground of another world.

I've a good friend that worked on the Apollo project for many years
(engineer) and you could see the sense of accomplishment running through him
when he spoke of it.
