We run IDS right of a 7206 VXR here, it's just an IOS upgrade. We actually got it free with out service contract...Works great, but of course it needs loads of memory and you can swamp the CPU depending on what kind of filters you set up. I believe the hardware IDS software is the same thing. Very programmable. You can write some pretty complex packet filtering stuff, we actually filtered out Code Red and Nimbda with IDS until recently.
