I have nothing really practical to contribute, other than a story. We moved into our newly built house on a Saturday. Sunday evening I heard a weird gurgle when the half bath toilet flushed.
Monday morning we woke up to about an inch of water on our brand new hardwood floors. Every time we ran water (shower, sink, toilet, anything) anywhere in the house, more nasty toilet water would flood out of the half bath toilet. We called a plumber immediately. It took him about two hours to snake the clog, which was somewhere underneath the basement floor, almost to where our plumbing system hooks into the sewer (luckily we had an access point in the floor of the basement). He said any water we'd dumped down the drain since we'd had the house had been backing up in our main plumbing drain line, so it was only a matter of time. The drain line was completely shut off. He said construction debris had been dumped into the drain (think drywall, paint rollers, etc.) and had sealed it shut. God bless plumbers ... we're pretty house-handy, but plumbing is one thing we don't like messing with.
