If you've ever been to a Nightwish, or Epica or Therion concert, the vast majority of the audience is male and in the IT industry, thus the name Prog-Nerd.. it's such a difference than the metal shows in the 80's, when it was long haired guys and girls in short skirts (ok, most of us grew up and wound up becoming prog nerds) :)
I lean toward the heavier side of things, I like the speed and aggression, it's cathartic, sort of. You may like bands like Solitude Aeturnus, it's called "Doom Metal" it's slow and heavy and just grinds in some points. -- Scott Stewart ColdFusion Developer SSTWebworks 4405 Oakshyre Way Raleigh, NC. 27616 (919) 874-6229 (home) (703) 220-2835 (cell) -----Original Message----- From: Michael Dinowitz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 21, 2007 2:10 PM To: CF-Community Subject: Re: Jared's music video prog nerd? New term to me. I'm a fan of whatever music 'moves' me. This is usually metal (mostly ballads) but over the hills has good lyrics and some fantastic instrumental pickups. the first one at 21 seconds is a nice jump from her initial lyrics. The second at 2:13, especially the twist at 2:28 just has the power I like. As for the singers, while I like Tarja (the original lead), she came off a bit pretentious to me. Good voice and presentation, but.... She fit more with the heavy side of the band. Annette (the new lead) seems a bit to 'pop' for them. Nice voice but not the same quality. Its missing that certain 'click' with the rest of the music. I have synesthesia when it comes to music. I 'see' it in physical terms and her voice and style doesn't align right with the bands previous works. It forces them to be 'lighter'. Maybe I just need more samples to get a better view of it but from what I've seen so far I prefer Tarja. Her voice 'sat' on top of a very solid foundation of sound (bass). I'd say that operatic voices fit more than pop with solid metal. She also allowed the other band members to take stage presence, something that I didn't see with Annetta. For those who want to see a video with Annette, this is a good one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ&feature=related On Dec 21, 2007 1:32 PM, Scott Stewart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I didn't know you were a prog-nerd.... > > Tarja's hot, what do you think of their new singer? > > -- > Scott Stewart > ColdFusion Developer > > SSTWebworks > 4405 Oakshyre Way > Raleigh, NC. 27616 > (919) 874-6229 (home) > (703) 220-2835 (cell) > -----Original Message----- > From: Michael Dinowitz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Friday, December 21, 2007 1:03 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: Jared's music video > > I was watching a great video by Nightwish and all of a sudden Jared seemed > to have popped up playing guitar. > Ok, it wasn't Jared but there was a close resemblance.
