Let me preface this by saying I really, really hate smoking. I've a bad reaction to smoke - my eyes puff up and get too bleary to drive and my skin breaks out in splotchy red patches. That said I absolutely LOVE live entertainment at small venues (comedy clubs, music, etc) but can't go very often because of the smoke (I'm in PA - still legal here). > The benefits of going "smoke free" are unquestionable. Whether it > merits the > type of government crackdown that we are seeing these days.....is still > debatable. Very debatable I'd say. I really don't know of any honest-to-goodness research on the dangers of second-hand smoke. There are definite physical reactions like mine but I would hardly call them life threatening. > The best argument for the government mandated smoking bans centers > around > the health issues involved with second hand smoke, particularly for > employees of the establishment. This is such a ridiculous argument. Second-hand smoke from a well-ventilated restaurant is a far less toxic environment than many workers face daily. I worked several summers doing building maintenance for a large printing company - the paper and ink dust, the solvents, etc - second-hand smoke is a heavenly dream compared to that. ;^) > I still think a compromise is preferable an all-or-nothing approach. Honestly I'm completely libertarian on this issue: if it's a private business then you make the rules. If you allow smoking then you lose some customers and perhaps some employees. If you don't you lose other customers and employees. There are clubs which have very successful "smoke free" (and "alcohol free" for that matter) nights. Government guidelines simply muddy an issue that better (and more cheaply) served by free market forces.
