I've actually had it installed since July-ish, just getting around to using the extra organizational tools since my job became too complicated to keep everything in my head/inbox. I have noticed that isn't the most lightweight of apps, but that was cured with a quick RAM upgrade, which was inevitable anyway. i usually have tow instances of FF, eclipse, Outlook, SQL Mgmt studio, Fireworks, and some semblance of RDP windows open at all times, and it was a little too much for 1GB of ram to take. never had the problems that you describe, though. i do notice that if i disable my google desktop sidebar, things to run a little bit faster, but it's not that noticeable where it inhibits my work.
guess what i'm saying is the more overhead factor doesn't outweigh it's usefulness factor.
