These aircraft are designed pretty hardcore and maintained even better.

As an example, that 777 is an "ETOPS" maintained aircraft meaning
Extend Twin-engined OPerationS.  There's a whole maintenance program
around ETOPS that stipulates, for example, that the same mechanic
cannot work on both side of the aircraft.

It'll be interesting to find out what failed here and if the pilot
full functionality of the control surfaces.

There's a rule-of-thumb in civil aviation that says that any incident
require 3 failures to happen and usually one them is pilot-error.
