I've mentioned before that I do virtual tours on the weekends for
extra cash. I also like to keep up with what's going with the
software and hardware ends of creating these virtual tours. Well,
just recently, Helmut Dersch, a german professor and creator of the
free stitching tool ptstitcher, came up with a new idea. There's been
an ongoing list of hardware and how fast it can stitch a gigapixel
panorama. The fastest so far has been the 8 core mac with 12G of
memory......until now.

>From Helmut's email:

A few minutes ago I finished the first run
of my latest toy, a fast stitcher & blender
specifically for gigapixel panos: 48min
for Bernhard Vogls testproject, more than 30
min faster than his previous record.

The stitcher uses a transformation stack
like PTStitcher, the blender-technology is similar
to enblend (i.e. "dumb" seam placement +
multiresolution, 8 levels, blending), but is implemented
differently and merged into the warper.

The software is written for the Sony Playstation 3
with 256MByte of RAM (for the testproject
never more than 60 MByte are actually required).
No temp-image is ever written to disk or RAM
and no more than 12 Gigabyte harddisk-space are needed.

Who would've thought that a ps3 would be so freakin' fast!
