I have to agree with Adam. Read the book or get the book tape, even if you
hate the idea. It addresses a lot of the issues people are bringing up. It
might not sell you on the idea, but if not, it will give you more ammo for
your side.

For example,

"To boil it down, we lower the tax burden on the rich and we raise the tax
burden on the poor."

This is completely off base. Every tax paying citizen gets a refund every
month for the amount of taxes spent on the amount that describes the poverty
line. Hence, anyone making below the poverty line does not pay taxes. They
could actually profit on the system by not spending. The rebate is not
tracked. The citizen just gets the check every month. So, if an
enterprising person were to grow their own food or buy used clothing (used
items of any type are not taxed), they could actually net money from taxes.

"1. That $3 gallon of gas you just bought could now be $3.50 (or more)."

In theory, this shouldn't happen. The Fair tax should remove the embedded
taxes already in all service and products. So, gas prices should go down
before the tax is applied. Again, that is in theory. Remember, any
business is not going to pay taxes on their own. They will pass the taxes
on to consumers in some form.

"2. The $200K house you are buying will be $240K after sales tax...and since
there is no income tax, there is no tax deduction on mortgage interest."

Like above, a 200K house should drop in price so that you would end up
paying around the same thing. Also, there is not federal tax on buying a
used house. Since there isn't an income tax, one shouldn't need a mortgage
deduction.

The biggest problem, and most of you have mentioned it, is the corrupt
nature of most politicians. Even if the system were implemented flawlessly,
it wouldn't take long for our leaders to make a mess of it. The book
mentions that it is our duty as voters to make sure this doesn't happen.
One of the more fascinating chapters in the book is the one on the history
of the current income tax. It shows a lot of the political games and the
greediness of politicians.
