Would you rather have it crash down in a populated area?
They estimate a 1% chance of it hitting an area with people in it.
Would you take those odds? Can you imagine the backlash we'd get if we
did nothing and it landed smack down in the middle of Iran and killed
civillians, or North Korea and killed civillians?
I'd rather blow it out of the sky and let the little pieces falls most
of which will burn up during reentry
