You also bring up the point that counting just murders is misleading since
there are far more acts of violence than there are murders. In the last 15
years there've been nearly two-hundred cases of bombing or arson (completed
or attempted) and nearly 3000 cases of directed violence (invasion,
assault/battery, vandalism, etc).

Also, just counting the murder of doctors is misleading. John Salvi killed
two receptionists at two clinics in Boston, are they counted? The numbers
I've found show over 20 cases of related murder or attempted murder in the
past 15 years.

Granted that the incidence has dropped dramatically in the past few years
(the majority of violence occurred in the early nineties). This is a good
thing and any attempt to indicate that the risk today is as great as the
risk then is clearly misleading and should be challenged. But the "farmers
and hairdressers" argument put forth in the original is absolutely
ridiculous and insulting.
