I think a lot of it is a mileage issue with the other hybrids.  The  
camry gets low 40's, the Altima gets high 30's to low 40's.  The  
hybrid silverado was rated at 1 mpg more (highway) than the standard  
version.

As for the civic, I think it got a bad start at first because it was a  
mild hybrid system.   In order for the AC to run, the engine needed to  
be running, etc.  I think that might have turned a lot of people off.   
I think you're right with your existing chassis theory too.  When you  
purchase the prius, you can't directly compare non-hybrid and hybrid  
model, therefore, the fuel savings vs extra cost for hybrid  
calculation is rendered moot.
