When I was first starting as a professional developer I had the opportunity to
be interviewed by a gentleman who is now a longtime friend and mentor. During
my interview with him, he asked me, "If you were asked to design an automobile
for a blind person, how would you do it?". Being the complete newb at that
time, I responded with things like "I would add audio feedback, and visual
sensors, etc". The interviewer nodded his head and said, "yes, those are very
neat ideas. However, how do you really know they're going to help unless you
are actually deaf? Maybe you should go ask the user what they want?" That day
I learned a valuable lesson, and ever since I have always tried to make sure I
am addressing the users actual needs, not what I think the user needs.
