Absolutely true, but inadvisable.

Case in point: the Sionics Noise Suppressor (I don't remember the patent
number or legal defining name) used on the MAC10 and MAC11 submachine guns.
While I was still in Georgia Tech I read the inventor's description of its
"unique functioning," and quickly drew a free body diagram to match the
description.

It was all physically impossible, and anyone who paid attention during high
school Physical Sciences class would know that, yet here it was with a bona
fide patent securing it as intellectual property.

The suppressor worked to a point (as any bleed-and-baffle noise suppressor
would), but it wasn't for the reasons they claimed.

My reason for suggesting that you build a prototype first (especially these
days when patents cost many thousands of dollars to acquire -- not like the
old days) is so you can discover exactly what works and why, and have your
patent agent or patent attorney do a patent search on that, and not what you
imagine.

Best of luck with it all, Scott.
