This story doesn't give the true scope of what the repariations movement is really after. What they want is cash payments and government subsidies that amount to trillions of dollars.
Yes, slavary was bad. And even though it was legal, it was still bad. Internment of the Japanese was legal. It was probably unconstitutional, but the laws of the time allowed it. I've always felt you could make a case that slavary after 1802 was unconstitutional. So, why should the Japanase get repariations and not African-Americans? First, reparations to the Japanese were paid to living victims. There are no living victims of slavary. Second, though I know of no specific statute of limitations on crimes against humanity, surely 150 years is a pretty significant amount of time to pass. If that isn't enough time, then maybe the Jews should sue the Romans, or the Arabs sue the Crusaders, or the Germans sue the Huns. You can't hope to address every wrong of history in a modern court of law. At some point, events of the pass cease to be relevant. It's up to each generation to rise the mistakes of its forebarers. The burden, in this case particularly, falls on black and white equally. Third, while many blacks remain in poverty, as do many whites and Latinos, the average black American is still better off than the average black African. While it might be regrettable that Africans were forced into this land, and very many generations suffered the worst kind of bigetory, we have indeed come a long way as a people in correcting past wrongs. The reparations are already taking place in the form of greater economic opportunity and growing equality. The blessings of this nation are sufficient reparations. Fourth, there is an obvious socialist agenda at work in the reparations movement. The leftists in this country have not been able to successfully redistribute wealth through taxation and the welfare state is now largely discredited. So, the next option is to sue it's way toward the redistribution of wealth. Redistribution of wealth is despicable in itself, but the reparations movement is particularly odious because it favors one class of people (blacks, but not necessarily poor blacks) over all other poor people. Fifth, the economic burden of paying out trillions of dollars in settlements would do grave damage to our economy. In such a scenario, the first people to suffer would be the poorest among us. So ultimately, reparations will harm the poor more than it will help them. There is much in this country that we can do to help all poor people better their lives, but reparations is not the answer. Redistribution of wealth is not the answer. Giving people hope and education and teaching them self sufficiency is the solution.
