1981-ish TI-99/4a was my first computer.
Learned Basic
1986 While I was in high school, Dad bought a Bentley Model Model XT
(8086) kit that he put together.
Learned DOS, did a lot of playing with and customizing VolksWriter
1987-1992 Went to school for Graphic Design (earned BFA in GD with
minors in Printmaking, Drawing and Art History)
Used Macs at school (MAC II, Quadras and LCs)
1993 - Got a job at a defense contractor in Leavenworth Kansas (Titan
Tactical Applications) and was part of a team to tear apart and
document Janus, the Army's wargame program. Got to see all kinds of
cool "non-existent" functionality (e.g., we found and documented code,
then the editors crossed it out and said "officially, the game does
not have this capability...")
1994 - Got a job in a print shop running a platemaking machine
1995 - Got a job as Art Director for a Educational Video Company
Boss said, "I want a web site"
Learned HTML
Ran a WebStar Web server on a 61850 with Filemaker Pro as a backend DB
Transferred all the data to an Access DB on a PC and bought a Netscape
Server to host pages/DB applications
learned Server-Side Javascript
1998 moved to Washington and started a consulting business.
Moved Shop to CF 4.0/4.5 and taught myself CF (joined CF-Comm and CF-Talk)
2001 started work with ALSTOM T&D (now AREVA T&D, where I still am)
ported their disfunctional/nonfunctional CMS to CF 5 and later CFMX.
2006 Boss said, "I need a Sharepoint site"
.... sigh...
